New SQL Server AlwaysOn Availability Group Reference Architecture

This document provides a reference architecture for deploying Microsoft SQL Server 2014 AlwaysOn Availability Groups on a Pure Storage FlashArray. This document includes step-by-step guidance on deploying a primary and disaster recovery site for high availability. The primary site is based on a Windows Server Failover Cluster that will be used with a Microsoft SQL Server 2014 AlwaysOn Availability Group with two physical server nodes for the primary replica and secondary replica. Two virtualized Windows Server 2012 R2 nodes based on VMware ESX 5.5 will be created for two additional secondary replicas. The disaster recovery site is based on a Windows Server Failover Cluster to create a highly available Hyper-V instance for a SQL Server 2014 stand-alone server.

The primary site will use Pure Storage FlashRecover Replication to replicate the AlwaysOn Availability Group data volumes to the disaster recovery site to be used with the SQL Server 2014 stand-alone server. FlashRecover replication can easily replicate data volumes and maintain data synchronization based on a configurable schedule.
